Emerging advanced techniques in interventional radiology (IR) allow patients to receive treatment they may have otherwise been ineligible for, with less risk and recovery time than is traditionally associated with surgery and general anesthesia. IR registered nurses and physicians are tasked with providing safe and effective procedural sedation for a complex patient population. These patients are often further complicated by previously prescribed opioid and benzodiazepine maintenance therapy. To address these challenges, continuing education is required to ensure all IR staff administering procedural sedation are competent in the management of sedated patients including airway techniques and reversal agents. Education is also important to maintain an appropriate knowledge base as moderate sedation paradigms change such as with the new classification of dexmedetomidine in the updated ASA guidelines. Utilizing survey feedback, our procedural sedation education plan was modified to meet the needs of our nurses and physicians. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Safe Sedation Training module was used in education development to highlight advanced sedation concepts. The IR staff was surveyed in regular intervals to ensure initiatives were appropriate and addressed continued concerns. These education interventions continue to ensure that IR is able to provide safe and effective sedation for our complex patient population.
