Moderate sedation and analgesia administration is one of the many critical responsibilities of the radiology nurse. Imaging departments continue to experience an increase in the complexities of minimally invasive procedures and patients are presenting with multiple medical comorbidities that can adversely affect outcomes. Radiology nurses need to not only rely on their assessment abilities, but also utilize emerging technology to enhance the tools
critical to providing the safest care. This session describes the research discussing the use of Capnography for procedural sedation.

ARIN’s Capnography Task Force has actively conducted and reviewed this research to develop the ARIN Position Statement for ‘Capnography Monitoring during Moderate Sedation Administration’ which is included in this presentation.

Karen has extensive nursing experienced in a variety of settings, i.e. emergency, consulting, education, and radiology. Her twelve years in the IR arena included both staff and charge nurse roles. Currently, she is a staff nurse in an ambulatory surgical center. As a member of her hospital’s Capnography Task Force in 2007, Karen participated in the rollout of Capnography in a three hospital system. She joined ARIN in 2003, elected to the BOD in 2005 and President in 2009 and selected as ED in 2012.
