Shared decision making is a process of communication in which clinicians and patients work together to make optimal healthcare decisions that align with what matters most to patients. The providers present treatment options available and empower patients to be active participants in selecting the therapy aligned with individual values and goals. The affordable care act and institute of medicine support shared decision making. This lecture will open with introducing a model for shared decision making, help the audience understand what it is and what the goal of shared decision-making is. This talk will use a case study of a patient who presented to IR for a port placement who was terrified of sedation and use that case to help the audience learn the types of medical decisions where shared decision making can be used, why it is important, how it can be learned and the benefits. This education session will provide the audience with a sample shared decision-making script and a sample decision aid and end with showing how sedation shared decision making was implemented in an IR practice, it’s impact and how to overcome barriers to implementing shared decision making in their own practice.
Following this course, participants will be able to:
Understand the components of shared decision making
Identify clinical situations that are appropriate for SDM
Understand what a decision aid is and how to utilize it in clinical practice
Understand the benefits and impact of employing sedation shared decision making in IR

What’s clear, however, is that evidence should be used to define best practices rather than support existing, and perhaps outdated procedures.
